The men in my family have this unspoken tradition. You could say it is in their genes. My husband began filling my whole house with flowers he picked from my peony, wild rose, and lilac bushes when we first started dating. I worked two jobs at the time and was rarely home, so he snuck extra keys from my parents and placed flowers in every nook and cranny. The house would smell amazing and I relaxed and fell in love. He has pulled the car over abruptly and ran between traffic to pull up wild flowers. Walking over to my window and handing me flowers that are considered weeds by many. That are lost among the hustle-bustle of all of us zooming by in our cars trying to get back and forth in our daily lives, choking them with exhaust fumes and dust.
Skip ahead a few years to 1996. Our son is born, then he is about 2 1/2 and he walks over with a clover he plucked from the yard and looks up at me. I exclaim with lots of loving thank-you’s and a lot of kisses on his curly head. He is silent as he looks at my open palm, placing the clover inside my hand. He turns and walks away. The beautiful part of this story is this happened all the time as he was growing up. The extra bonus gift was little rocks! He was the one who added these to the bouquet of love. I have them in my jewelry box, china cabinet, and some in a glass bowl with a very special flower he bought for me to wear when he was earning the title of a United States Marine. His flower giving did not end there. When he comes back home, or we are in Florida on vacation with him, he picks me random flowers. Walks over, placing them in my hands, I give him a big hug and kiss, and he walks slowly on.
Today, when I am playing outside with the grandkids, this little man will walk over and look up at me with those same familiar serious brown eyes, holding flowers out to place in my hand. My heart squeezes so hard, and I smile and kiss him on his curly head. He turns and quietly walks away. I look down at pretty delicate hand-picked flowers and curiously, he somehow has placed a little rock inside.

Thank you so much. We have ten grandchildren, six girls, and he is one out of four boys! So proud and amazed how he does exactly like our son did. It is like deja-vu when he gives me a flower, and then a rock! 🙂 Jen

Truly incredible! I am also constantly amazed how my oldest granddaughter repeats me in every way, large and small, even though nobody has ever given her any information.
